Al-Khazraji, in his book نفس الصباح في غريب القرآن وناسخه ومنسوخه, volume 2, page 497, says that

was abrogated by

He said that Ibn Hazm Al-Andaulsi and Ibn Salaama said the same.

The Prophet (PBUH) used to be anxious as revelation descended on him and would move his tongue and lips in anticipation,

That is what 20:114 is talking about. This has nothing to do with any apprehension of the Prophet (PBUH) that he may forget what has been revealed to him, which is what 87:6 is talking about. God assured him in 87:6 that he won't and confirmed that in

And

That is one of the primary arguments of the scholars who rejected the notion that there were ever any verses that were abrogated in recitation. I concur with their argument and conclusion.

Abdul-Muta`aal Al-Jabri, in his book لا نسخ في القرآن...لماذا؟, pages 140-141, refutes this claim by saying that 20:114 simply instructs the Prophet (PBUH) not to hurry up with recitation before the inspiration is complete! That is, he should listen carefully first and when the inspiration is done, articulate it then. That's how one memorizes text.

He says that other exegetes opined that the meaning of 20:114 is that the Prophet (PBUH) should not recite verses to his companions before he understands those verses himself first! Al-Jabri likes that interpretation and says that teachers of text that is required to be memorized insist on proper pronunciation first, then on understanding of the text. The combination leads to perfect memorization.

As for 87:6, it simply eases the Prophet's worry (PBUH) that he may forget some of the inspiration he received. He was human and humans forget at times. God assured him that he should not worry about that; God will see to it that he memorizes all that He wants him to memorize.

Dr. Mustafa Zayd, in his book النسخ في القرآن الكريم, volume 2, pages 292-193 (item 1206) in the footnotes, lists this claim among three which he left out on purpose because "they are based on a basis that we do not wish to darken by its mention this thesis!" Referring obviously to the fake story of الغرانيق referenced in the OP.

The other two claims he left out, and also rejects for the same reason, are 87:6/22:52 and 87:6/75:12.

Ibn Salaama, in his book الناسخ والمنسوخ في القرآن الكريم, pages 84-85, supports this claim and mentions the circumstances of revelation of 20:114 as reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim:

Narrated Ibn Abbaas (RA) that one time the Prophet (PBUH) was reciting Chapter 53 in a congregational prayer and when he read verses 19-20,

The Prophet (PBUH) wanted to say,

which is the next verse, but Satan said, " تلك الغرانيق العلى وإن شفاعتهن لترتجى" (Those are the high prizes, and their mediation is hoped for). And then the Prophet (PBUH) continued reciting! Quraysh (the Prophet's tribe which was then polytheist) said, "He came back to our religion!" and they prostrated.

Then God sent down Gabriel to tell the Prophet (PBUH) that this was not how the Chapter was sent down! The Prophet (PBUH) asked him, "And how was it sent down upon me?"! Gabriel told him the correct revelation. The Prophet (PBUH) was quite depressed and sad, so God, to console him, revealed,

Then, the weird narration continues, these verses were revealed,

And the Prophet (PBUH) twice would not recite the Quran after Gabriel revealed new verses to him. Then God revealed 87:6,

to abrogate what was before it and since then the Prophet (PBUH) had not forgotten anything until he met his Lord.

What a farce! They want us to believe that the Prophet (PBUH) did not memorize the verses revealed to him, and worse, he could not tell when false verses were inserted!!

And, as if that was not enough lying about the Prophet (PBUH), they want us to believe that Satan would attend a congregational prayer and say out loud false verses and no one, including the Prophet (PBUH) could recognize the new voice! Or did Satan imitate the Prophet's voice?! Or did Satan control the Prophet's tongue to make him say the false verses?! Satan has no power over humans, as God relates to us what Satan will say on the Day of Judgment,

And adding insult to injury, the narration wants us to believe that the Prophet would not follow God's order in 75:18,

Finally, how is this absurd story even related to 20:114? The verse commands the Prophet (PBUH) not to hurry up the revelation before it is done. The story clearly states that it was Satan that did the hurrying!

It is a sad state of affairs if any Muslim actually believes this cockamamie story.

On page 88 of the same book, Ibn Salaama actually says that it was the Prophet (PBUH) who said the fake verses! Does he not know the penalty for lying about the Prophet (PBUH)?

Shouldn't he have at least tried to verify the authenticity or lack thereof of narrations he quoted in his book? Al-Albaani was one of many scholars who verified that all narrations mentioning this weird story are very weak. He wrote a book about it called نصب المجانيق لنسف قصة الغرانيق (Setting up catapults to blow up the story of the high prizes!) :)
