النسخ في القرآن بين المؤيدين والمعارضين محمد محمود ندا

This book, ISBN 977-5366-86-0, was first published in 1966. Its 1996 edition is distributed by Maktabat Al-Dar Al-Arabiya Lel-Ketab in Egypt.

The author, Sheikh Muhammad Mahmoud Nada, was general manager of a religious department of the Egyptian cabinet ministry in charge of Al-Azhar. The title of the book can be translated to Abrogation in the Quran between Supporters and Objectors. It is 175 pages.

The book is anti-abrogation. It has on an early page a signed certificate dated 1991 from Al-Azhar stating that the book does not conflict with the principles of Islam! The author mentions on page 8 that his chosen title for the book was "No Abrogation in God's Book" and that the title, but not the content, was objected to by Al-Azhar so he changed it to the current title.

In my search for these two books, I found a lot of criticism directed at the authors. In general, it is not surprising that an anti-abrogation author will have other opinions that are also not mainstream. It is also not surprising that such author will be attacked, sometimes in colorful language :). However, I could not tell if these books and authors are on the fringe like others we ran into in our searches before, or they are 'legitimate'. In particular, the first of the above books is more than 500 pages long, making it the longest anti-abrogation book that I have seen, and I wonder if it has useful details given its length.

I agree with the hedging Al-Azhar made. It's one thing to say that there's no abrogation in God's Book and another to say that the written Quran has no abrogated verses. God described the Torah and the Gospel as the Book and both have been abrogated by the Quran. There is also evidence, though it's not related to the abrogation doctrine we research in this project, that verses were recited and then caused to be forgotten and never made it to the written text of the Quran. Those verses were in the origin of all the Books, the Preserved Tablet.

One thing is clear from Nada's book: We pretty much have covered the Egyptian anti-abrogation literature. Almost all the quotes by the author are ones we already noted from books we have read.

I think Al-Zalmi's book is important in that regard. It may include non-Egyptian references or offer a different point of view. If not, we will at least know that the Egyptian school of thought on this subject is not a limited, local phenomenon.

In particular, the first of the above books is more than 500 pages long, making it the longest anti-abrogation book that I have seen, and I wonder if it has useful details given its length.

I got the book "Impossibility of the existence of abrogation in the Quran" by Ihab Hasan Abdou

استحالة وجود النسخ بالقرآن، إيهاب حسن عبده، نشر مدبولي الصغير ٢٠٠٥م

and started reading it. He follows a Quran-only approach to religion, and uses strong and colorful language (and many exclamation marks) to further this agenda and attack the opponents. Because of this, it would be considered a fringe book.

The introduction and the first two chapters (through page 222) are dedicated to advocating the Quran-only approach, with very little direct discussion of the abrogation issue. The discussion of abrogation starts in Chapter 3 on page 223 and it addresses the abrogation doctrine only through page 356 which is the end of Chapter 6. Thus, most of the 504 pages of the book do not address the abrogation doctrine, an unusual situation for a book about abrogation.

If one starts with Chapter 3, the book sounds substantive if aggressive. The author seems to quote texts that are logically consistent with the points he is advocating so at least he put an effort in working on his arguments. He raises some points and makes some arguments that have merit, notwithstanding the strong Quran-only agenda that colors the book.

From Chapter 7 on (starting on page 357), the author discusses abrogation of both recitation and ruling as well as abrogation of recitation and keeping the ruling. He dedicates almost 100 pages to refuting the stoning verse and ruling, in what must be the most thorough treatment of that subject that I have seen to date.

Thanks, Pragmatic, for finding this book and for letting me borrow it. The copy you found is an earlier one (2000 A.D.) than the one quoted above and by a different publisher, مكتب التفسير بأربيل and it was not yet registered at ISBN. It's registered instead in المكتبة الوطنية (the National Library) as number 355, year 2002. It's 452 pages long, the first 100 of which are refutation in principle, and the rest refutes each case. He covers all cases claimed abrogated by Ibn Hazm Al-Andalusi and that's the largest set mentioned in the literature! Looks like it was worth the wait.
