Quote:
{2:275} Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But God has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with God. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

{2:276} God destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And God does not like every sinning disbeliever.

الربا does not mean interest. It means illicit growth, the exact opposite of الزكاة, as God states in,

So, I suggest "usury."

Also, the words "into insanity" have no foundation. The clause يتخبطه الشيطان من المس simply means "is being thrashed around by Satan's touch."

I suggest,

I suggest,
{2:275} Those who consume illicit growth (usury) do not rise [on the Day of Resurrection] except as rises one whom Satan keeps bumping with touch. That is because they say, "Merchandising is like usury." But God has allowed merchandising and has forbidden usury. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desisted, then for him is what has preceded, and his affair is up to God. But whoever has returned [to usury] - then those are the inmates of the Fire; they therein are lasting.

{2:276} God obliterates usury and cultivates charities. And God does not like every sinful disbeliever.

I second that. Even historically, both الربا and usury started out as "neutral" words describing an on-going practice (one of the explanations of usury in Webster is interest paid for the use of money - obsolete use). Both became bad words, for good reason :), while retaining their essential meaning.
