Quote:
{6:4} And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away therefrom.

I suggest,
{6:4} And whatever comes to them of a sign from the signs of their Lord but they have been therefrom turning aside.

Quote:
{6:5} For they had denied the truth when it came to them, but there is going to reach them the news of what they used to ridicule.

I suggest,
{6:5} So, they did belie the truth when it came to them, so surely will come to them the news of what they had been ridiculing.

Quote:
{6:6} Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them which We had established upon the earth as We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others.

The italicized clause does not quite convey the meaning in the Arabic. What the Arabic is saying is that God had given to prior people a lot more than He has given to the Meccan pagans. He destroyed the former, so the latter better take notice! If they think they have it good, it can all go away quick.

I suggest,
{6:6} Did they not see how many a generation we destroyed before them [whom] We had established upon the earth [in ways] We have not established you? And We sent [rain from] the sky upon them in showers and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and brought forth after them a generation of others.

I agree that the original translation of that clause was poor. The only remark is that I don't like "established." I thought about "empowered," "enabled," and "bestowed," but I haven't found a good alternative yet.

I like "enabled." So, let me suggest,
{6:6} Did they not see how many we destroyed before them of a generation We had enabled in the land [in a way] We have not enabled you therein? And We sent the sky upon them showering copiously and made rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and initiated after them a generation of others.
