{5:70} We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not fancy, a segment [of messengers] they belied, and a segment they kill.Quote:
{5:71} And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then God turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And God is Seeing of what they do.
"Punishment" may have been the result of their crimes but the word the Arabic uses in
فتنة which means "tumult." I suggest,
{5:71} And they reckoned there would not be tumult [as a result], so they became blind and they muted. Then God let them repent then [again] they became blind and they muted - many of them. And God is All-Seeing of what they do.I propose "let them repent" instead of "turned to them in forgiveness" because the Arabic refers to repentance, not forgiveness, which follows repentance. God has specified the way repentance works in Chapter 9,
