Quote:
{4:140} And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of God [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed God will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together -

I suggest,

{4:140} And He has already sent down upon you in the Book that when you have heard the verses of God being rejected and ridiculed that you do not sit with them (the disbelievers) until they indulge in another conversation. Verily, [if do not] you would then be like them. Verily, God is assembling the hypocrites and disbelievers in Gehenna (Hell) altogether-

Quote:
{4:141} Those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from God, they say, "Were we not with you?" But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], "Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?" God will judge between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will God give the disbelievers over the believers a way [to overcome them].

Asad is the only one who got the italicized sentence right, IMHO. He translated it, "Have we not earned your affection by defending you against those believers?" Except, I'd stick to the Arabic and say, "by defending you against the believers."

I suggest,
{4:141} Those who monitor you. Then if there were for you an opening (triumph) from God, they would say, "Were we not with you?" But if there was for the disbelievers a share (their defeat was not total), they would say [to them], "Did we not control you and bar you from the believers?" Well, God judges between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will God make for the disbelievers over the believers a way.
