I think "murky" is better than "confused." Also, "matter" is closer than "condition" in meaning to the Arabic word, although it doesn't sound as nice in the context.
"Murky" is a very good choice. I was thinking "mixed up" because in Chapter 55, God tells us about the miracle of the sea meeting the river without the sea getting diluted or the river becoming salty and described the meeting of the two bodies of water using the verb
مرج which is the root of the adjective
مريج used in the above verse.
Now that I think about this some more, I'm inclined to conclude that the English verb "to merge" may be an adoption of the Arabic verb
مرج!
