The Arabic does not say "abandon their religion." It says "go back." So, a better translation, IMHO, of the last clause would be "that perhaps they will go back (on their religion)."

I suggest,
{3:72} And said a bevy of the People of the Book [to each other], "Believe in what was sent down to the believers at the beginning of the day and disbelieve at its end that perhaps they may go back,"

Quote:
{3:73} And do not trust except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed, the [true] guidance is the guidance of God. [Do you fear] lest someone be given [knowledge] like you were given or that they would [thereby] argue with you before your Lord?" Say, "Indeed, [all] bounty is in the hand of God - He grants it to whom He wills. And God is all-Encompassing and Wise."

{3:74} He selects for His mercy whom He wills. And God is the possessor of great bounty.

Excellent translation. Except that I respectfully disagree with the interjection "Do you fear" in the translation of 3:73 and the assumption that this sentence is interrogative. That's because there is no punctuation mark at that point in the Arabic, nor an interrogative article. I read that sentence as a continuation of what the bevy have said, interjected by God's instruction to the Prophet (PBUH) to tell them that guidance from God is the guidance. For this reason, I suggest this as a translation of 3:73,

{3:73} "And do not feel at ease except with those who have followed your religion." Say, "Verily, the guidance from God is the guidance." [They continued,] "Lest should someone be granted the like of what you were granted, or that they would rebut you thereby before your Lord." Say, "Verily, [all] bounty is in the Hand of God - He grants it to whom He wills. And God is Capacious, Wise."

As for 3:74, I suggest this translation:
{3:74} He selects for His mercy whom He wills. And God is the One with the grand bounty.

Agreed, and it is uncharacteristic that they didn't bracket "their religion"
