Quote:
{3:166} And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of God that He might make evident the [true] believers.

I suggest,
{3:166} And what hit you the day the two assemblies met is therefore by permission of God that He might note the faithful.

Quote:
{3:167} And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of God or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And God is most Knowing of what they conceal -

I'd make one change to translate the verb نافقوا as a verb. I suggest,
{3:167} And that He might note those who feigned; and it was said to them, "Come, fight in the cause of God or [at least] fend." They said, "If we know [that there will be] fighting, we would have followed you." They to disbelief that day are nearer than to faith, saying with their mouths what is not in their hearts. And God is most Knowing of what they suppress-

Quote:
{3:168} Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."

I suggest,
{3:168} Those who said about their brethren while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then fend off from yourselves death, if you have been truthful."
