Quote:
{2:94} Say, [O Muhammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with God is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."
I'd translate this slightly differently,
{2:94} Say, "If the everlasting home with God is exclusive to you (children of Israel) of [all] people then wish for death if you are truthful.Quote:
{2:96} And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with God. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And God is Seeing of what they do.
"Greed" translates
جشع, not
حرص which is better translated "to feel strongly about something" or "to cling tightly to something", which only Asad used in his translation. So, I suggest,
{2:96} And you will surely find them the most clinging of [all] people to a life, and [even] more than those who have associated [others with God in worship]. [Every] one of them wishes to be prolonged a thousand years, but it would not nudge him from the torment that he should be prolonged. And God, of what they do, is All-Seeing.
