{2:186} And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.

I do like the variation of words "invocation, supplicant and calls upon" because in English repetition is considered not good prose. This is not a problem in Arabic. But I don't want the translation to sound like bad English just to remain faithful to the Arabic.

The other observation I have is that the above translation uses the same verb "to respond" to translate both أجيب and فليستجيبوا. I think that a better translation for the former is "to answer", while "to respond" is an excellent translation of the latter. So, I suggest,

{2:186} And when My worshipers have asked you [, O Muhammad,] about Me - verily, I am near. I answer the invocation of the supplicant when he has called upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that perhaps they may mature.
