Asad is the only one who agrees with me that تولى in this verse means "takes over," not "goes away." He translated it "prevails." The word certainly means "to turn back" too, but that semantic makes lesser sense than "taking over" given the subsequent action of that man.

Agreed. I'd use "is in charge"

I suggest,

{2:204} And of the people is he whose uttering impresses you in [this] the nearest life, and he calls God to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of adversaries.

Quote:
{2:205} And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And God does not like corruption.

I suggest,
{2:205} And when he has taken over, he would endeavor throughout the land to corrupt therein and destroy crop and population. And God does not like corruption.

Quote:
{2:206} And when it is said to him, "Fear God," pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.

I suggest,
{2:206} And when it is said to him, "Watch out for God," pride would take hold of him in sin. Therefore, sufficient for him is Gehenna (Hell), and how surely wretched is the cradle!

Quote:
{2:207} And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of God. And God is kind to [His] servants.

I suggest,
{2:207} And of the people is he who sells himself, desiring the approval of God. And God is kind to the worshipers.
