I see your point about "term". As for "used to", it is actually a good translation, since
كانوا يعملون does indeed indicate they may have stopped. They did, because they died!
But I do see the point, so I suggest instead,
{29:5} Whoever has hoped for meeting God - Indeed, the term of God (the appointment with Him) is surely coming. And He is the keenly Hearing, the very Knowledgeable.{29:7} And those who have believed and have done the righteous [deeds] - We will surely expiate away from them their misdeeds and will surely recompense them per the best of what they have been doing.
