I suggest,

{24:11} Verily, those who came with the slanderous lie are a gang among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof among them - for him is a great torment.

{24:12} If only, when you heard it, did the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious lie."

{24:13} If only did they [who slandered] bring for it four witnesses. And when they do not bring the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of God, who are the liars.

{24:14} And if it had not been for the favor of God upon you and His mercy in [this] the nearest [life] and the Hereafter, there would have touched you, for what you delved into, a great torment.

{24:15} As you circulate it with your tongues and say with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of God, tremendous.

{24:16} And if only, when you heard it, did you say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Sanctified are You, [O God]; this is a grand slander."

{24:17} God warns you not to return to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers.

{24:18} And God makes clear to you the verses, and God is All-Knowing and Wise.
