Quote:
{19:46} [His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."

I suggest,
{19:46} [Abraham's father] said, "Are you longing for other than my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so keep away from me for a long while."

Quote:
{19:47} [Abraham] said, "Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.

I suggest,
{19:47} [Abraham] said, "May peace be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He has been welcoming to me."

Quote:
{19:48} And I will leave you and those you invoke other than God and will invoke my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy."

I suggest,
{19:48} "And I will part with you and those you invoke other than God and will invoke my Lord. Perhaps I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy."

Asad explains this verse very well. the invocation here is the one Abraham promised his father. He had a gut feeling that maybe he shouldn't do it. That's why he said, "maybe I will not be unhappy because I prayed for you." Does the above translation suggestion convey this meaning? If not, please offer suggestions.

I would say "and keep .." rather than "so keep ..."

Good point. I don't have a suggestion yet, and frankly I find "I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy" to be a bit long winded.

Actually, I think that "so" is most appropriate here, because the statement is consequential. Abraham's father was giving him three choices: desist, get stoned or leave.

How about rephrasing it: "Perhaps, in invoking my Lord, I will not be unhappy."
