{18:9} Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?

The italicized word is a translation of الرقيم, which literally means the thing that was inscribed or marked. Translator Dr. Ghali wrote that it was a stone tablet on which the names of the cave sleepers were inscribed. I find that a reasonable translation, so I suggest,

{18:9} Or have you thought that the fellows of the cave and the Raqeem (inscribed tablet) were, of Our signs, [particularly] amazing?

Translator Syed Vickar Ahmad wrote that the cave is located near the town of Aylah (Iraq?).

Quote:
{18:10} [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."

Good translation, but I'd rather translate هيئ لنا as "set up for us", i.e.,

{18:10} [Mention] when the youths went for shelter to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and set up for us of our affair forthrightness."

Quote:
{18:11} So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.

I suggest,
{18:11} So We struck over their ears (made them sleep) in the cave for a number of years.

Quote:
{18:12} Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time.

I suggest,
{18:12} Then We sent them off (awakened them) so that We may note which of the two parties (they or their town's folk) is a better counter of what they stayed in duration.
