Quote: {16:22} Your god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are disapproving, and they are arrogant. The word مستكبرون does mean "arrogant." Literally, however, it means "seeking superiority". The subtle difference is that the latter conveys the semantic of constant attempt to be superior which constantly fails! So, I suggest, {16:22} Your god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are objecting, and they are seeking superiority. Quote: {16:23} Assuredly, God knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant. The phrase لا جرم is a negative, so a better translation would be "Undoubtedly". Literally, however, it means "it is not outlandish!" That's because the word جرم mean something that is out there, plain for everyone to see. It is the root of both جُرم (celestial object) and جريمة (crime). Do you get the semantic? That said, I can't think of an English word that conveys that full semantic, so I'll settle for this for now, {16:23} It is not exotic that God knows what they conceal and what they declare. verily, He does not like superiority seekers. |
