This word means putting a shield between oneself and the wrath of God. It has been translated "Fear of God" and "God consciousness", "piety" among other good translations. Other possible translations are: Vigilance for God or watchfulness of God. We think God-watchfulness is closest to the Arabic meaning.

In the Khutba yesterday, the Khateeb made a good observation about the word التقوى. He said that it has a linguistic meaning, which is simply avoidance of harm. He said that the Quran has used the word in its linguistic meaning, e.g.,

But it is the "logistic" meanings of the word that the Quran used it for the most often, he said. By that he meant all the ways for a believer to establish that protection from the wrath of God. He observed that every verse that uses the word for its logistic meanings expounds on that meaning in its body. For instance,

in which, the piety referred to is achieved by commitment to the beliefs that mankind is one family, that spouses are equal halves of a pair, and by being good to kin.

I love that observation. Each verse mentioning piety explains one way to implement it.
