This word is one of God's 99 most beautiful names. While all the names of God, that is His attributes, can be ascribed to people, two of these names are reserved for God only. "Allah" is the first of these words and "Ar-Rahmaan" is the second one.

The word has been translated The Gracious, The Beneficent, The All-mercy, among other translations. It implies that God's mercy is without bounds and covers all creatures. We are inclined to translate it as "The Beneficent."

P.S. Throughout these forums, we will be using the International Phonetic Alphabet for pronunciation. These will be enclosed in slash marks as in the subject line of this post.

In today's Khutba, the imaam defined the words الرحمن and الرحيم. he said that الرحمن means the One whose mercy encompasses everything and everybody, while الرحيم means the One whose mercy is continuous.
