{12:74} The accusers said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars?"

"The accusers" is an interpretation that is not in the Arabic text. I suggest,
{12:74} They said, "Then what is its penalty if you have been liars?"

Quote:
{12:75} [The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

Again, the interjection "[The brothers]" is an interpretation. I suggest,
{12:75} They said, "Its penalty is that he in whose bag it is found, he [himself] will be its recompense (become a slave). Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

I suggest

{12:73} They said, "By God, you have certainly known that we did not come to corrupt in the land, and we have not been thieves."

Agreed.

I am not comfortable with translating two instances of the same Arabic word in the same verse with "penalty" once and "recompense" once. Also, I suggest the last part be "and thus we recompense the wrongdoers"

I agree. Let's make it:
{12:75} They said, "Its penalty is that he in whose bag it is found, he [himself] will be its penalty (become a slave). And thus we recompense the wrongdoers."
