Quote:
{11:53} They said, "O Hud, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you.
Excellent translation! I'd only add a bit to it in order to translate the preposition
بـ which means "any", or "the tiniest of."
{11:53} They said, "O Huud, you have not brought us any clear evidence, and we are not about to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you.Quote:
{11:54} We only say that some of our gods have possessed you with evil." He said, "Indeed, I call God to witness, and witness [yourselves] that I am free from whatever you associate with God
The verb
اعترى does not mean "to possess," it means "to smite" as Asad suggested. I suggest,
{11:54} "We only say that some of our gods have smitten you with evil." He said, "Verily, I call God to witness, and witness you [me] that I am absolved from whatever you associate with God [in worship]."
