Abdul-Muta`aal Al-Jabri, in his book لا نسخ في القرآن...لماذا؟, page 124, mentions that some have thought that
was abrogated by a hadeeth, narrated by Faatima bint Qays, in which she said, "The Messenger of God, peace be upon him, did not let me have residence nor alimony." Al-Jabri counters that the reason was that it was a punishment for her assault on her in-laws, as detailed in the two authentic books of Hadeeth. That explains it.
Faatima understood 65:6 to be about divorced women who may still be taken back, not those who have been divorced for the third and last time. She quoted for evidence,
And commented on the clause, "You do not know, maybe God will cause something afterward", saying, "What can happen after three divorces?"
However, according to Al-Jabri, Umar, Ibn Mas`ood, Abu-Haneefa, Ath-Thawri, many Sahaaba and second generation scholars, as well as Koofi jurists have ruled that divorced women get residence and alimony regardless of how many times they have been divorced by the same husband. Maalik ruled residence only for divorcées who may still be taken back but no alimony. If she is pregnant, however, he ruled residence and alimony until she delivers.
