Ihab Hasan Abduh is the first one I read for who mentions this case. He refutes it in his book استحالة وجود النسخ بالقرآن, page 329. He does not name who made that claim, which is that

was abrogated by


He ridicules the claim saying: what was abrogated? Does God now require from us what is not within our capacity?

The claim is indeed ridiculous, but I wish Ihab named the claimant.

It's suspicious that he didn't name the claimant since this would be a legitimate opportunity to attack him, something Ihab is not shy about.

I came across your post quoting Dr. Zayd, who too did not name the claimants and rejected the claim. Dr. Zayd's argument is that there is a misunderstanding of the confinement construct (أسلوب القصر) in 2:286. Indeed, some hard things are within our capacity. If one were to understand the clause يريد الله بكم اليسر ولا يريد بكم العسر (God intends for you ease; He does not intend for you difficulty), in 2:185, to mean elimination of all hard requirements, then fasting and alms and pilgrimage will all be abrogated!

Well, that's not what Ibn Salaama said in his book الناسخ والمنسوخ في القرآن الكريم, page 41. He wrote this:
ـ(لا يكلف الله نفسا إلا وسعها)ـ علم الله تعالى أن الوسع لا يطاق، فخفف الوسع بقوله ـ(يريد الله بكم اليسر ولا يريد بكم العسر)ـ، وقد قيل: إن الله تعالى نسخها بآية آخرها

Translation: God knew that "capacity" is unbearable, so He lightened it with 2:185.

No explanation as to why God ordered full capacity first though He knew it was unbearable! Isn't that attributing randomness, or worse: change of mind, to God?
