Another abrogation claim quickly dismissed by Ibn Al-Jawzi is that

was abrogated by

Ibn Al-Jawzi writes,

He explains the circumstances of the revelation. People felt awkward when they shared meals with the handicapped. They thought it was unfair because the blind cannot see where the best food is and the sick does not eat a fair share. Some people also said that when Muslims went out to battle, they would leave their food with those who could not join, such as the handicapped and the sick and allowed them to eat from it but they felt awkward about it. The verse was revealed to remove the awkwardness.

Ibn Al-Jawzi said that the claim that 4:29 abrogated that is not something that a scholar would say and he left it at that.

Al-Khazraji asserted in his book نفس الصباح في غريب القرآن وناسخه ومنسوخه, volume 2, pages 538-539 that the abrogating verse is

I doubt that. I agree with Ibn Al-Jawzi that the reference is of 4:29.

I doubt that. I agree with Ibn Al-Jawzi that the reference is of 4:29.

Al-Khazraji named Ibn Zayd as the one who said that.

Sa`eed ibn Al-Musayyib and `Ubaydullah ibn Abdillah ibn `Utba said that 24:61 abrogated the custom of Muslims who, when 2:188 was revealed, stopped eating each other's food!

Another opinion of Ibn Al-Musayyib was that 24:61 was about handicapped Muslims with whom healthy Muslims going for battle left their keys and allowed them to eat from their food but they shied away lest they should transgress. `Aa'isha, may God have been pleased with her, offered that exegesis too.

Ibn Zayd had another opinion: that it was about removing the remorse of the handicapped who could not join battle.

Dr. Mustafa Zayd, in his book النسخ في القرآن الكريم, volume 2, pages 250-252 (items 1119-1123), proves that 4:29 could not possibly have abrogated 24:61 because it was revealed before it! He quotes Ali ibn Abi-Talha narrating that from Ibn Abbaas, reported Ibn Al`Arabi in his book أحكام القرآن, volume 3, page 1390.
