An excellent chronological list of the authors of books dedicated to abrogation is included in Al-Jabri's book on pages 121 to 126. He lists 43 authors in the order they were deceased, from the year 118 H. to the year 1190 H. He comments on many of them and mentions that the first 20 books on the list were lost except for a few pages here and there, so there is no way to tell what they actually meant by naskh. Some clearly predate Imam Al-shafeiy, so I am still puzzled by the previous statement that he was the one who started the discipline.

If there are some names on his list that are not included in the above post, kindly send the names to me so I can update the list.

Sure, but the list of names are of a different category. Mostly names I have never heard of, and their stature as scholars may not be in the league of the above list.

Thank you for the great list. Zayd Ibn Thabit may not be nearly as famous as the other Sahaba, but the job Uthman chose him for is by far the most important task of that era. May God reward both of them on our behalf.

I thought that listing the chronological order of revelation is pertinent here. Bear in mind that the order shown below is the majority opinion but there were other opinions suggested. Also, some verses were inserted by direction of the Prophet (PBUH) into prior chapters.

Afaana, in his book الرأي الصواب في منسوخ الكتاب, page 15, offers a thoughtful explanation of the significance of the above facts. He writes,

Translation:
The truth is that God, may He be exalted, has made ambiguous the dates and times of revelation, and furthermore rearranged, transferred and moved the places of some verses in Chapters, in order to make it quite difficult to put these verses in chronological order, specially verses with rulings, for a wisdom only God knows. But we may understand aspects of it when we comprehend that all of the Quran is required for us, that there's no conflict between its verses and that verses with rulings are mostly certain in meaning.

I find that insightful. Had God wanted us to know the exact order of revelation, He could've done that by instructing the Prophet (PBUH) to either state it to his fellows or to instruct the scribes to write the Quran in such order. The order of revelation, though a matter of curiosity, is irrelevant because the entire Quran is to be followed. It's impossible to claim abrogation of a verse by another, and make the claim stick, if you have no way to prove when either one was revealed!
