"الناسخ والمنسوخ في الكتاب والسنة" by Abu-Ubaid Al-Qasem Ibn Salam (أبو عبيد القاسم بن سلام ), died 224 H. (not to be confused with Abu-Alqasem Hebatullah Ibn Salama, died 410 H.), published in 2006 by Dar Al-Kotob Al-Ilmeya in Beiurt, Lebanon. The book was edited/verified by Mostafa Abd-Alqader Atta (216 pages).

This book has remarkably detailed information about old scholars and references, which the editor added to the original manuscript through the introduction and through numerous footnotes. The editor certainly added value to the original manuscript by Abu-Ubaid, which is a typical pro-abrogation book of the old school.

Abu-Ubaid died in 224 A.H., much earlier than many who are 'credited' with establishing the abrogation doctrine, e.g., Al-Jassas who died in 370 A.H. and Al-Tabari who died 310 A.H. The book has all the ingredients of the abrogation doctrine as discussed in old books that were written afterwards, so I see the merit of the editor's calling the book the earliest in classifying the abrogating and abrogated.

Haani Taahir, in his book تنزيه آي القرآن عن النسخ والنسيان, pages 3-7, lists a number of books about abrogation, some of it I haven't heard of before, such as

  • Dr. Hilmi Abdul-Haadi: He discussed the 75 claims stated by Abdul-Qaahir Al-Baghdaadi and accepted only ten of them. I wish Taahir gave the name of Dr. Abdul-Haadi's book.

  • Mannaa` Al-Qattaan discussed abrogation in his book

  • Dr. Subhi As-Saalih also discussed abrogation in his book with the same title: مباحث في علوم القرآن.

  • Badraan Abul-`Aynayn dedicated to abrogation a chapter in his jurisprudence book

  • Jamaal-ud-Deen Al-Qaasimi discussed abrogation in his exegesis book

Taahir also points out that Az-Zurqaani tackled 22 claims (I bet they are As-Suyooti's) and approved less than half of them, ten. This is significant because Az-Zurqaani was an avid proponent of abrogation and one of the minority of scholars who accepted that the Sunna can abrogate the Quran.

Is there a way we can get this? He may have a good refutation argument for an important case, or even maybe one of the big 3.

I'm afraid the big three were all accepted by Az-Zurqaani, as well as Dr. Abdul-Haadi, according to Haani Taahir, pages 161-164 of his book

Haani Taahir, author of تنزيه آي القرآن عن النسخ والنقصان, mentions on page 50, that Dr. Şubħi Aş-Şaaliħ wrote a book about abrogation,

On page 274, Dr. Aş-Şaaliħ discusses the twenty claims of As-Suyooti and refutes ten of them.

Found the publisher of Al-Jabri's first book, thanks to Haani Taahir who quoted him on page 75 of his book It is

3. "التبيان في الناسخ والمنسوخ في القرآن المجيد" by Abdullah Ibn Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Ibn Hamza Ibn Abu-Alnajm Alsa`di Alyamani (العلامة عبد الله بن حمزة بن أبي النجم الصعدي اليماني), died 647 H., published in 2008 by Mu'ssasat Al-Tareekh Al-Arabi in Beirut, Lebanon, and edited/verified by D. Abdullah Al-Husseini (188 pages).

I finished this book just now and I find it useful in terms of exposure to other authors and scholars whom the other books have not mentioned. It also has extensive commentary by Dr. Abdullah Al-Husayni, in which he often introduced a brief bio of quoted scholars spelling out their full names. I always like to see that.

Another book that addresses abrogation is referenced by Haani Taahir in his book

This is particularly important because apparently the book refutes all abrogation claims it discussed, and because its author (d. 1974) is a most revered authority on Foundations of Deduction in Islamic jurisprudence. He took that lead after Professor Ahmed Ibrahim, may God bless their souls.

Another book we may want to look at is

It is referenced by Haani Taahir in his book

I just finished reading this book. I can recommend it for any student of abrogation. It offers many good arguments, quotes scholars of many different persuasions and is to the point. That's why it accomplishes much in less than 200 pages.

If you are not afraid to read an Ahmadi book and can remain objective and look for the merits of arguments rather than who said them, you will enjoy and benefit from reading this book.

Besides, the book has the coolest title, title font and cover design :)
