"Lord of mankind" is a correct translation. It emphasizes the grandeur of God, which certainly befits Him. However, this chapter is one of the two "refuge" chapters of the Quran (المعوذتين), the other one being the preceding chapter, 113. Such designation causes me to view this chapter as a personal connection with God. Therefore, I prefer to translate الناس here as "people."

So, I suggest the following translation:
{114:1} Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of people."
{114:2} "The King of people."
{114:3} "The God of people."
{114:4} "From the evil of the retreating whisperer."*
{114:5} "Who whispers in the chests of people."
{114:6} "From among the sprites and the people."
-----
*Satan

I don't know if "Jinn" is an English word. To most English speaking, it sounds like a card game or an alcoholic beverage! I did find it in the Webster dictionary, but as a word transliterated from Arabic. I'm not totally opposed to it though.

I would write the word "god" with a small g here.

Quote:

*Satan

I would strongly urge against the footnote.

I agree with your point, Pragmatic, about the footnote. In fact, the retreating whisperer is not restricted to Satan by evidence from the sixth and last verse, "From among the sprites and the people." However, I cannot use a lowercase "g" in "The God of people" without doing the same for "Lord" and "King!" And that doesn't sound right when the theme of the chapter is seeking refuge.

So, I suggest:
{114:1} Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of people,"
{114:2} "The King of people,"
{114:3} "The God of people."
{114:4} "From the evil of the retreating whisperer,"
{114:5} "Who whispers in the chests of people,"
{114:6} "From among the sprites and the people."

Point well taken.
