{96:1} Recite in the name of your Lord who created -

اقرأ does not mean "recite." "Recite" translates أنشد. I'd use the most obvious and direct word here, i.e., "Read."

Quote:
{96:2} Created man from a clinging substance.

I figure that "a clinging clot" is more accurate.

Quote:
{96:3} Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

Again, change "Recite" into "Read."

Quote:
{96:5} Taught man that which he knew not.

Preferring modern English, I'd say instead, "Taught man that which he did not know."

I guess they are using "recite" as in "read aloud." However, the Prophet's (PBUH) response at the time "I am not a reader" pins it down to being "read" as in reading a book, so the correct translation is indeed "Read."

I suggest,

{96:1} Read in the name of your Lord who created -

{96:2} Created man from a clinging clot.

{96:3} Read, and your Lord is the most Generous -

{96:5} Taught man what he did not know.
