I'd only make slights edits to this excellent translation,

{2:249} Then once Taaloot (Saul) parted along with the soldiers, he said, "Verily, God is testing you with a river. So whoever drank from it, then he is not of me, and whoever did not taste it is indeed of me, except one who has scooped a scoop with his hand." But they drank from it, except a few of them. Then when he had passed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "No stamina have we today against Jaaloot (Goliath) and his soldiers." Said those who presume that they are meeting God, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of God. And God is with the enduring."

{2:250} And once they appeared to Goliath and his soldiers, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience, plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving folk."

{2:251} So they defeated them by permission of God, and David killed Goliath, and God granted him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from whatever He wills. And if not for God pushing back people - some of them by some [other], the earth would surely have rotted, but God has grace upon the worlds.
