Quote:
{2:178} O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But whoever overlooks from his brother anything, then there should be a suitable follow-up and payment to him with good conduct. This is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy. But whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment.

This is a good translation. However, the part about overlooking something is not clear. The premise is that in murder cases, the family of the victim may pardon the convicted murderer and choose instead punitive damages. In that case, payment must be promptly and fully made by the perpetrator. So, I suggest,

{2:178} O you who have believed, prescribed for you is [legal] retribution for the murdered - the free man for the free man, the slave for the slave and the female for the female. But whoever receives any pardon from his brother, then [there must be] follow-up with the customary [punitive payment] and delivery of it in a benevolent manner. That is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy. But whoever has transgressed after that then for him is a painful torment.

Quote:
{2:179} And there is for you in legal retribution [saving of] life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may become righteous.

I'd put "legal" in square brackets and replace "righteous" with "watchful [of God]." I suggest,

{2:179} And there is for you in [legal] retribution [saving of] life, O you with intellects, that perhaps you may watch out [for God].
