But whoever receives any pardon from his brother, then [there must be] follow-up with the customary [punitive payment] and delivery of it in a benevolent manner. I'd put "legal" in square brackets and replace "righteous" with "watchful [of God]." I suggest,
{2:179} And there is for you in [legal] retribution [saving of] life, O you with intellects, that perhaps you may watch out [for God].
